Who publishes this site
WebsiteDown.org publishes the checker and its troubleshooting guides under the WebsiteDown.org name. We are an independent website, not the official status provider for the services in our directory. Questions and corrections can be sent through our contact page.
Three different kinds of information
- Measurements: responses returned to our automated requests, with the target, timestamp and regional results. A response is evidence about that request; it is not a complete test of a service.
- Interpretations: the rules we use to turn those responses into a verdict. The methodology explains their limits.
- Guidance: steps for investigating a failure. An example is an illustration unless it includes an identifiable source or a recorded measurement. A possible cause is not a diagnosed incident.
Use of AI and automation
AI assistance has been used to draft and revise site content and code. Some service pages originated from shared templates. AI-generated wording is not evidence that a service experienced an incident, that we tested a competitor, or that an action achieved a measured improvement. During the September 2026 revision we removed unsupported benchmark scores and anonymous incident claims, and revised service pages with individually written diagnostic comparisons, reporting routes and source links, while preserving their troubleshooting sections.
The automated checker does not use a language model to decide whether a website is reachable. It applies rules to HTTP and diagnostic results. Explanatory text and an observation’s timestamp are separate: updating an article does not make an older measurement current.
What supports a claim
Protocol explanations link to standards or the documentation of the relevant provider. A statement about WebsiteDown’s behavior should match its implementation. Published measurements should include the original output, time and limitations. We do not present a vendor’s marketing claim as our own test result.
Comparison pages provide evaluation tasks. We do not publish numerical rankings without a recorded procedure, inputs, dated results and a stated scoring rule. WebsiteDown.org is our own product; including it in a comparison is a conflict readers should know about.
Corrections in this revision
- The result “Up” no longer tells a visitor that the issue must be “just you”. A root-page response cannot establish that.
- Undocumented competitor scores and anonymous incident outcomes have been removed. They should not have been presented as measured findings.
- Service homepages are identified as website links rather than automatically described as official outage dashboards.
- The methodology now explains access-denied responses, cached observations, missing probes and the use of a single hosting provider.
If you find a remaining problem, send the page URL, the disputed claim, and a supporting source. For a checker result, include its downloaded JSON and what you saw in your browser. Remove account identifiers, tokens and private information before sending.
Advertising and affiliate links
Some pages contain advertising code or affiliate links. Affiliate links should be disclosed near the recommendation and marked as sponsored. A commercial relationship does not make a tool more accurate. Ads and affiliate offers are separate from the checker’s verdict. Editorial revisions are dated when the substance changes.
